"Teens Get Early Start On Planning for Success
Inglewood, CA-(May 11, 2004) More than 150 students from Inglewood High School participated in the 2nd annual PEYS Project Youth Summit on Thursday May 6, 2004 at the Inglewood Public Library to discuss abstinence, pregnancy, poverty, STD’S, and how to achieve career goals.
PEYS (Partnership Empowerment Youth To Succeed) a non-profit organization held the summit to raise consciousness about post secondary school options and about making the right choices that promote future goals.
“It is vitally important for students to understand that anything other than abstinence puts them at risk of contacting a sexually transmitted disease which will impact the career choices they have, and possibly be the key factor in when they die,” said Dr. Barbara Rhodes, Community Liaison Director.
Guest Speaker Roosevelt Roby discussed the importance of getting students involved in entrepreneurial activities now “because when the mind is engaged in something productive, the right choices are natural.”
Roby is the President/CEO of the WBE.NET Global Internet Trade Course, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching high school students about global trade and entrepreneurship. His course has been instrumental in turning former gang members and other disadvantaged youth into model students by integrating their knowledge of basic school studies while teaching the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, e-commerce and international trade.
“Students need to be stimulated and I have found that discovering the magic of entrepreneurship while still in high school is very powerful, and, an option that is a good alternative to sex.”
According to the Los Angeles County STD program, Inglewood has one of the highest rates of STD’s with three times the number of chlamydia cases among 10-19 year-olds than the county average and is now considered “The Hot Spot.”
Other guest speakers at this year’s summit included Leslie Small, Motivational Speaker, and T. Fox a former Inglewood High School Student.
